Joe Milton III

Joe Milton Scouting Report (mini sample)

  • Watched: Kentucky (2023), Missouri (2023)
  • Pros:
    • Has a bazooka for an arm.
    • Better than I expected in the short game, screen passes, quick slants, shovel passes, etc.
    • Scans the full field, but has slow reactions to what he’s seeing.
  • Cons:
    • Doesn’t have the quickest throwing motion.
    • Accuracy leaves a lot to be desired and even when it’s accurate, it’s often difficult to catch due to unnecessary velocity.
    • Aside from screens and slants, it feels like all of his passes come out late.
    • His 6th year in college and is still behind the curve from a mental perspective.
    • Late breakout; he didn’t have much of an impact until his 6th season.
    • Disappointing runner; consistently falls forwards but he goes down at first contact more often than not.
  • General:
    • Turned 24 over a month ago.
  • Overall Take:
    • Pro-readiness: 9th (out of 9)
    • Potential: 9th
    • Overall: 9th
    • Number Grade (out of 100): 66
    • Joe Milton is one of a few QBs that I’m doing smaller samples for as I just don’t have the time to commit to full samples. If he were a young QB prospect, I might have interest in him, just taking a flier on the physical tools and counting on him to develop as he matures. He is already an old prospect though, as he is 24 years old before even being drafted. Between sitting behind entrenched starters, poor play when given an opportunity, and some injuries, it took Milton a long time to find his footing and he didn’t eclipse 2,000 passing yards in a season until his 6th and final year in college. Despite his age, he has a very long ways to go in terms of all the mental aspects of the position. He occasionally goes sideline to sideline with his progressions, but more often than not, locks onto his primary read and stares them down without recognizing LBs underneath or lurking safeties. Outside of throwing screens and quick slants, his throws are almost always late. While his arm strength helps to make up for some of this, it’s just not enough. Milton is the definition of a project QB with tantalizing build and arm strength, but given his age, he’s not someone I’m super interested in trying to develop.
  • NFL Comparisons:
    • Most Likely Comp: Logan Thomas
    • Peak Comp: Brock Osweiler
