Davis Mills

Davis Mills Scouting Report

  • Watched: Colorado (2020), Washington (2020), UCLA (2020)
  • Pros:
    • Crisp, effortless throwing motion.
    • Can throw with velocity or with touch.
    • Tons of anticipatory throws relative to most college QBs.
    • Very comfortable dropping his throws over the top of the LBs and underneath the safeties.
    • Pretty good accuracy, especially considering the types of throws he’s making; he trusts his WRs a lot.
    • Calls his own protections and audibles at the line.
  • Cons:
    • Very small sample size.
    • Not very good at sliding around pass-rushers within the pocket.
    • Just doesn’t look comfortable in his movements, be it outside handoffs, rolling out, or climbing the pocket.
    • Really struggles to throw accurate screens; seems like a footwork issue.
    • Comes with the territory of trying to throw WRs open, but it leads to a lot of dangerous passes.
  • General:
    • Offense includes a mix of under-center and shotgun
  • Overall Take:
    • Pro-readiness: 6th (out of 8)
    • Potential: 6th
    • Overall: 7th
    • Number Grade (out of 100): 75
    • Davis Mills enters the NFL with just 13 collegiate starts under his belt and nagging left knee issues. Between that, the lackluster mobility, and some dangerous passes, he isn’t a guy I can justify spending a 1st round pick on. Having said that, Day 2 is fair game as he does have starting QB upside. His combination of arm talent and anticipatory passing are pretty awesome to watch when it clicks together. The fact that he’s so relatively inexperienced as a starter and is already comfortable making adjustments at the line of scrimmage and also making those advanced throws is really impressive and makes you wonder if there might be a good starter in there somewhere. I think the most important thing for him to work on at the next level is the pocket movement skills. If he can get that down, you can probably deal with some of the other short-comings, but I’m skeptical he’ll be able to work that out, and as a result, I give him the bare minimum required for a 3rd round grade.
  • NFL Comparisons:
    • Most Likely Comp: Josh Rosen
    • Peak Comp: Less Combustible Jameis Winston
