Anthony Gordon Scouting Report
- Watched: Houston, Washington, Oregon, Air Force
- Pros:
- Release is ludicrously quick.
- Can make off-platform throws.
- Throws with impressive touch; can drop it in between levels of coverage.
- Cons:
- Shows flashes of velocity here and there, but doesn’t have an overly strong arm.
- Iffy arm-strength and lazy mechanics will give DBs a chance to make plays.
- Far too slow in his reads right now.
- General:
- Strictly air raid offense.
- Throwing motion is what I would call laissez-faire; you won’t really find any other QBs that move and throw the way he does. Looks almost like a short stop giving football a try.
- Overall Take:
- Pro-readiness: 9th (out of 9)
- Potential: 8th
- Overall: 8th
- Number Grade (out of 100): 73
- Anthony Gordon is a lot of fun to watch, but is definitely in the category of developmental prospect only at this point in time. He moves and throws the ball in a way dissimilar from pretty much any QB you’ll find in the NFL; to me, he looks like a short stop or 2nd baseman that just decided to give football a try one day and that was enough for Mike Leach. Having said that, the disregard for normal throwing mechanics has resulted in an insanely quick release and a player who can get a throw off no matter where his feet, shoulders, or arms are. Add in natural touch and accuracy and elusiveness in the pocket and you have some tools to mold into a playable QB here. Having said that, he takes far too long going through progressions right now and doesn’t have the strongest arm; those two things force him into the developmental/practice squad category for me. If he develops his processing speed, he could ultimately turn into a good backup or maybe even a spot starter, but at the end of the day, that warrants a Day 3 pick in my book.
- NFL Comparisons:
- Most Likely Comp: Homeless Baker Mayfield
- Peak Comp: Poor man’s Baker Mayfield
