Jordan Love

Jordan Love Scouting Report

  • Watched: LSU, Kent State, BYU (2018), Michigan State (2018)
  • Pros:
    • Effortless velocity on his throws.
    • Can fit the ball into some very tight windows.
    • Can create with his legs.
    • Capable of making all the throws.
    • Shows more touch than you generally see from the guys that are cast as “gunslingers”.
  • Cons:
    • Relies on coach to make the adjustments at the line.
    • Stares down his first read an alarming amount of the time.
    • Never really see him progress past a half-field read.
  • General:
    • Over the top delivery
    • Every snap is out of the shotgun
    • A ton of play-action
    • Can’t imagine this would come up very often in the pros, but he pancaked a lineman on a WR reverse
  • Overall Take:
    • Pro-readiness: 7th (out of 9)
    • Potential: 1st
    • Overall: 3rd
    • Number Grade (out of 100): 86
    • Where Jordan Love gets drafted will ultimately boil down to two things: (1) the interviews; he’ll need to convince teams that he can be taught, and (2) the coaching staff; they’ll need to be confident in their ability to teach. Love is the best example of a high risk/high reward QB prospect that I’ve come across in the past few years. The arm strength is absolutely there; he can throw with velocity when he’s retreating, rolling out to his left, etc. The ball placement is there; he can fit balls into windows that maybe nobody in this class outside of Burrow is capable of. The mechanics are there; his footwork is pretty good and delivery is beautiful. The arm angles are there; he’ll side-arm throws around the pass rush and I’ve even seen him throw it submarine-style like one of those weird relief pitchers. The mobility and play-making abilities are there; he’s a threat in the read option and he can buy time to free up bigger plays down the field. But the big knock on him is pretty big: it is seriously difficult to find examples of him getting past his initial read on any play (unless it’s a play that breaks down into a backyard improvisation). If you can teach him how to read a defense, he has as much potential as anyone I’ve scouted outside of Mahomes and Lamar.
  • NFL Comparisons:
    • Most Likely Comp: Colin Kaepernick (with much more passing than running relative to Kaep)
    • Peak Comp: Poor man’s (and let me emphasize it again, POOR MAN’s) Aaron Rodgers
