Shea Patterson

Shea Patterson Scouting Report

  • Watched: Iowa, Wisconsin (2018), Notre Dame (2018), Vanderbilt (2017), Auburn (2017), South Alabama (2017)
  • Pros:
    • Throws with touch.
    • Quick release.
    • Very animated pump-fake.
    • Can throw the back shoulder.
    • 4.70-4.75 speed, can make defenses pay in read option and buy time with his legs.
    • Comfortable throwing on the move.
    • Has improved in terms of climbing the ladder this season.
  • Cons:
    • Can buy time with his legs, but pocket awareness is a weakness.
    • A lot of throws purely with upper body; doesn’t shift weight with his legs.
    • Slightly above average velocity.
    • Average arm strength; attempted a Hail Mary that only traveled 40 yards and came up 5+ yards short of the endzone.
    • Has some pretty terrible misses on his deep ball.
    • Looks to run too often/too quickly.
    • Doesn’t always recognize that play is dead and he should throw it away.
  • General:
    • All shotgun offense.
  • Overall Take:
    • Pro-readiness: 8th (out of 9)
    • Potential: 9th
    • Overall: 9th
    • Number Grade (out of 100): 72
    • At Ole Miss, he operated out of a shotgun, RPO based system and was efficient doing so. He’s an above average runner who displays good touch on his passes and a knack for playmaking. Under Jim Harbaugh, he remained in the shotgun on almost every snap and for the most part, has looked like the same prospect. The mobility, quick release, and touch give him a chance at success in the right offense in my opinion, but it will need to be an offense that mostly lives on passes over the middle or in the short flats. You will not want him throwing deep outs or from the far hash. His relatively limited arm strength and lackluster pocket presence give him a low ceiling; at the absolute best, he’s probably a below-average starter.
  • NFL Comparisons
    • Most Likely Comp: Johnny Manziel (on-field)
    • Peak Comp: Poor Man’s Jeff Garcia
