Overall Grades

Number Grades (out of 100)

What the number means:

  • 95+: Number 1 pick, Andrew Luck territory, a lock to be a franchise QB.
  • 90-94: Top 5 picks, fairly confident that they’ll develop into a franchise QB with a chance to be a perennial Pro Bowler.
  • 85-89: Top 10 picks, should be a long-term starter, but due to a lower ceiling or a lower chance of reaching their ceiling, I don’t value them as highly as the 90+ prospects.
  • 80-84: Mid to late 1st round picks, project as starting QBs but probably no chance of being elite.
  • 75-79: 2nd or 3rd round picks, can potentially develop into an average at best starting QB.
  • 70-74: 4th or 5th round picks, project as long-term backups.
  • 65-69: 6th or 7th round picks, either very low ceiling or very low floor

2019 Rankings Based on Potential:

Relative to the past two draft classes, I would slot Drew Lock behind Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen as far as potential goes, but ahead of everyone else. The other five are not special as far as potential goes, though I do think Haskins and Jones have the potential to become good starters.

  1. Drew Lock
  2. Dwayne Haskins
  3. Daniel Jones
  4. Shea Patterson
  5. Clayton Thorson
  6. Ryan Finley

2019 Rankings Based on Pro-Readiness:

I believe this draft class is very poor in terms of pro-readiness. A year ago, I felt that four or five QBs were relatively ready to start in the NFL with Sam Darnold being the one I was most worried about. All five of those QBs went on to be taken in the first round and have all ascended to become their respective team’s starting QB.

With this year’s draft class, I think that Daniel Jones can start right away and I’m semi-comfortable with Haskins starting as a rookie, though I think it would be in Haskins’ best interests to be brought along slowly. I believe that there is a chance that Drew Lock or Shea Patterson could be thrust into a starting spot out of desperation, but I would not count on it. All in all, the only QB among this group that I could see approaching even average QB play as a rookie would be Daniel Jones.

  1. Daniel Jones
  2. Dwayne Haskins
  3. Drew Lock
  4. Shea Patterson
  5. Clayton Thorson
  6. Ryan Finley
