Kyle Trask Scouting Report
- Watched: Ole Miss (2020), Texas A&M (2020), Georgia (2020), Alabama (2020 SEC Championship)
- Pros:
- Does a nice job climbing the pocket.
- Moves defenders with his eyes more than most in this class.
- Trusts his receivers to win 1 on 1 matchups, particularly when they have a size advantage.
- Generally solid accuracy.
- Flashes of making full field reads.
- Takes some snaps under center; comfortable sticking the ball out and turning his back to the defense to sell play-action.
- Cons:
- Doesn’t put much zip on the ball.
- Has a tendency to not step into his throws, which hurts his accuracy and velocity.
- Doesn’t make anticipatory throws.
- Holds the ball too long and takes far too many hits as he’s throwing the ball.
- Needs to learn to take the easy throws rather than holding the ball hoping for something to develop down the field.
- Will be one of the slower QBs in the NFL the moment he’s drafted.
- General:
- Florida used him as a short-yardage back ala the Bills and Josh Allen despite his lack of speed.
- Overall Take:
- Pro-readiness: 8th (out of 8)
- Potential: 8th
- Overall: 8th
- Number Grade (out of 100): 67
- To put it simply, I just don’t think there’s really anything to feel excited about with Kyle Trask. He had a couple good years of college football but I just don’t see how his game translates to the NFL. His arm just isn’t very good; maybe he could survive if he showed a knack for making anticipatory throws to negate the velocity issues, but he’s a QB that needs to see his target come open before he’ll pull the trigger. The one exception to that is that he trusted his bigger receivers (particularly Pitts) to win in 1 on 1 situations down the field. All in all, lackluster arm strength, lack of anticipatory throws, and terrible mobility make him a poor NFL prospect in my eyes. Maybe a good QB coach will be able to fix his footwork and unlock some additional velocity that way, but even so, there isn’t much of a ceiling there for Trask in my opinion.
- NFL Comparisons:
- Most Likely Comp: Ryan Nassib
- Peak Comp: Kyle Orton
