Dwayne Haskins

  • Watched: Penn State, Purdue, TCU
  • Pros:
    • Keeps his head up when rolling out or running towards the line of scrimmage in case a receiver comes open
    • Quick throwing motion
    • Good velocity and can get the ball down the field with ease
    • Functional mobility, but probably around the 4.85-4.90 40 time range
    • Does a nice job of moving around in the pocket
    • Calls protections at the line
    • Shows some ability to look safeties off before returning to his target
    • Rarely takes sacks; will throw the ball away if he’s unable to slide away from pressure
  • Cons:
    • Mechanics seem to break down against pressure
    • Ball placement is inconsistent at all levels, particularly misses high a lot
    • Doesn’t get sacked, but he takes a lot of hits from holding the ball too long
    • Has the same issue that Josh Allen had a year ago where he opens his hips too much/doesn’t transfer his weight when throwing left
  • General:
    • Works almost exclusively out of the shotgun
    • A lot of screens
  • Overall Take:
    • Pro-readiness: 2nd (out of 6)
    • Potential: 2nd
    • Overall: 3rd
    • Number Grade (out of 100): 81
    • Scouting Haskins was a strange experience for me. Each game I watched, I came away thinking he didn’t play all that well, and then looked at the notes that I had written and saw that his pros overwhelmingly outnumbered his cons. This tells me one of two things, and I’m not sure which it is yet: (1) His ball placement, which is my main knock on him, is so bad that it’s outweighing everything else that he has going for him, or (2) He has basically everything you want but it just hasn’t all clicked together consistently yet. I think I would tend to lean towards the latter, more optimistic take on him. As far as his skill-set goes, I think he’s very similar to Derek Carr; natural arm strength, functional mobility, quick throwing motion. At the same time, Carr’s mechanics really suffer when pressure comes and that is present in Haskins as well. The big difference is that Haskins will hold the ball until the last moment, resulting in taking a lot of hits. Carr generally tries to get rid of the ball quickly (although he’s taken a beating in his own right this season).
    • Most Likely Comp: Derek Carr
    • Peak Comp: Carson Palmer
